8 January 1706/7 Mr: Charles Chiswell bringing his servt: boy Charles Elliot before this court for running away and Craving an allowance for ye. same according as ye. Law directs And ye. Boy confessing that he run away ye. space of one whole week & killed his Masters horse of ye. value of ten pounds Sterl. wch. he stole at ye. time of his runing away the sd: Mocon is referd till next Court for Judgmnt. Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (13) 31. 24 March 1706/7 Charles Chiswell Complaint against Chales Elliot being continued to this court for Judgmt and ye said Charles Chiswell this day pducing his accot. of charges agt. ge said Elliot for runing away (Vizt) for a horse 2500 li of tobaco for taking him up in new Kent 200 li of Tobaco for taking in York County 200 li for his absence in ye first runing away eight days also court charges and attending three courts and ye. court finding no Law to direct an allowance for ye horse but for runing away, It is therefore order'd that ye. said Charles Elliot serve ye. said Charles Chiswell after ye. Expiracon of his time by Indenture or custome according as ye Law directs Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (13) 59. 24 May 1708 On the petition of John Marot seting forth that a servant woman belonging to him named Sarah Barefoot hath been absent & runaway from his service & so Continued to do for the space of six Months & ten days & praying that he may be allowed as by law it is directed & for his Charges in appre- hending her amounting to two hundred & thirty pounds of Tobo: the sd Barefoot being before the Court & did not deny what was alledged agst: her It is therefore ordered that she serve her said master after the time of her service by Indenture is Expired one year & four months accord- ing to Law. Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (13) 137. 24 July 1708 Charles Chiswell petitioning this Court & seting forth that Samuel Wilson a Mulatto & Servant to him by Indenture runaway from his service & did at sevl: times in his absence take & ride three horses of the sd Chiswells so that for some time he wholy lost the use of them & praying the Courts judgemt: for the sd Wilsons paying by service the penalty of the Law in like Cases & likewise that he might serve for the time of his absence wch: was ten days, the sd Wilson appeared & Confessed the fact the Court on Consideracon of the sd: Chiswells Arguments & the Laws by him produced are of opinion that there is none that relates to or gives any penalty for unlucky boys rideing horses but that they are subject to their masters Correccon.
